As an online freelancer most time you are working, you are working in front of a laptop or external monitor, meaning you could be looking at a screen around eight hours a day. You may not have symptoms but you will get eye strain nevertheless and it is called Computer Vision Syndrome. According to WebMD, ” Working at a computer requires that the eyes continuously focus, move back and forth, and align with what you are seeing.” And that means your eye is constantly trying to focus and requires lot of effort. Also screen contrast, flicker and glare could make it worse.
Symptoms could be blurred vision, double vision, dry and red eyes, eye irritation, headaches and neck or back pain. All which could affect negatively on your work performance. If you are experience these, it is recommended to talk to your doctor about it.
In fact we stare at some sort of screen all day long. We have mobiles, laptops, tables, TV’s and we just move away from one to another screen. It is always easier to prevent than treat so do look after your eye health as an online freelancer.
Here are five tips on how to avoid eye strain from computers.
1. Fix work area lights
Incorrect lighting causes eye strain and fatigue. Overhead lighting should be more or less same as your screen brightness. Try to avoid light glare as well.
2. Correct your posture
We often sit leaning towards the screen to be closer to the screen but this is not just bad for your eyes but also for you back. You may have an issue with eye sight if you find yourself often leaning towards the screen to see better. Read post about “How to stay healthy while working at home”.
Correct posture goes together with next tip of sitting too close to the screen.
3. Correct distance to screen
Very common problem especially with mobile phones. You can see people just inches away from their mobiles and same goes with laptops. This will strain your eyes quickly.
4. Blink more!
Yes, blink more. There are studies that show we blink much less when looking at a computer screen. You could also try eye drops if your eyes are particularly dry.
5. Remember 20, 20, 20
Keep the distance from your eye to the screen at 20 inches, take 20 seconds brake every 20 minutes and focus somewhere 20 inches away.
Always see a doctor t if you are experiencing any kind of problems with eyes.
