Online freelancer work from home and as much as it is the best way of working it does have some problems that need to be tackled. One of the top questions that we hear is: how to stay motivated while working at home? What are the best tips of keeping motivation going when nobody is looking over my shoulder? And so on…
When online freelancers ask – we answer!
Here are our five top tips on staying motivated while working at home:
Mindset is the starting point of successful project as you cannot really achieve much with a negative mindset. So if you find yourself always putting tasks to “tomorrow list” ask yourself why and take time to consider your mindset. Mindset is especially important when considering repetitive tasks or tasks you are not really keen on doing but have to do. If you think those tasks are just awful – it will be awful to do! So keep the mindset on the positive mode not matter how silly it may feel.
If you find hard loving that task you keep pushing off, learn to love the feeling once it’s done – and you’ll be doing it next time with much more enthusiasm.
2. Effective goal setting
We work much more productive when we are working towards a goal. Remember photo of a donkey with a carrot on a stick in front of him? Take time to think that your carrot is and really let yourself feel the wonderful feeling of achieving the goal. Once you have find out what your goal is, break it into small and more manageable steps and tasks. Make a list of those tasks and put a deadline for each. Use a calendar for each deadline to ensure you get a reminder when something is due, or use traditional list where you can tick of any finished task. It can be surprisingly pleasing!
3. Check your budget
Keep a budget where you have set goal income for each week and then keep record of actual income by day/week. This was you anytime see if you are over (preferably) or under budget. Those days when motivation is low you are probably on the latter but looking at negative figure might just spark snoozing motivation into action.
If you are working on an hourly contract on Odesk you can see your income very quickly by logging into your profile and then checking “Reports” tab and you know in an instance where you are financially.
4. Take a break
Sometimes lack of motivation comes from overworking and stress. Only medicine for this is to walk away from the laptop and do something that takes your mind totally away from work. It is very important to take time off as well as stress and lack of free time will kill motivation very effectively. Sometimes quick coffee break kicks your motivation into high gear and sometimes it needs bit more work.

5. Be your own best manager
Be the best manager you could have and remember to reward yourself when you achieve goals! Your rewards could be something small like a cake during next coffee break, day off following day, or bigger reward such as a holiday in dream location. It does not matter what it is as long as it is motivating to you and you cannot wait to get it. Of course you can’t reward yourself from each task you achieve but this works very effectively to tasks that you are not that keen on doing.
